Wabash Boys Varsity Tennis Finishes 4th out of 8 at Logansport Invite: Wabash Boys tennis put in a full day at Logansport High School on Saturday 8/26. Competing in three head to head matches the Apache Netters went 1-2 on the day finishing 4th in the tournament. In the opening match of the day, Wabash played Lewis Cass for the second time in 4 days and overcame a strong start out of the gate by the Kings to ultimately wiin the match 4-1. Wins came from the following players: Grant Ford, Eli Mattern, Troy Guenin-Hodson, Alex Dinkins/Cooper Long. Also competing for the Apaches but coming up a bit short in their match was Spencer Stout and Ashton Coffman. After a win in round 1, the 2nd match of the day pitted Wabash against the host school Logansport. Wabash lost the head to head match 0-5. Coach Mattern shared " Honestly the boys played very well in this match. The 0-5 score is not indicative of our performance against a school of Logansport's size and program history. Two individual matches were decided in 10 point tie-breakers and another match was a 4-6, 4-6 loss. This match was close, very close, we just have to take the next step as a team to win this type of match. I am very proud of all the boys at every position. It was the best tennis I have seen from this team in the past 4 years." In the 3rd match of the day, Wabash mixed up the line up and lost another close one, 2-3. Playing singles that match was Eli Mattern (1 singles), Alex Dinkins (2 singles) and Cooper Long (3 singles). Lacing them up in double action was Troy Guenin-Hodson paired with Ashton Coffman (1 doubles); Spencer Stout and TJ Fritter played at 2 doubles. Mattern and Long picked up wins in their singles matches. Mattern explained the line up change, "We have 4 guys that are all very good and can play many positions. Tournament formats give us the opportunity to stretch our games by playing other positions. The singles game and doubles game are so different in the skill sets that need to be utilized to win. With the versatility of our top 4, we can mix things up a bit, work on parts of our game that need attention and make our lineup stronger in the long run, all the while, staying competitive in most matches." Individual Results on the Day: Grant Ford 1-1 Eli Mattern 2-1 Troy Guenin-Hodson 1-2 Alex Dinkins 1-2 Cooper Long 2-1 Spencer Stout 0-3 Ashton Coffman 0-3 TJ Fritter 0-1 The Apaches are no 3-5 on the season, 1-0 in the conference. Up this week for Wabash is a conference match with Maconoquah and a non-conference match with Eastern.
