Big Fifth Inning Leads Wabash Varsity Apaches Past Northfield

Wabash Varsity Apaches scored eight runs in the fifth inning, which helped them defeat Northfield 10-3 on Wednesday. Haiden McWhirt drew a walk, scoring one run, Mackey Sorg doubled, scoring three runs, Caleb Dubois induced Treyce Daughtry to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, Derek Reed was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Cooper Long drew a walk, scoring one run, and a wild pitch scored one run. Northfield got on the board in the top of the first inning after Wabash Varsity Apaches committed an error, Rylan Schultz singled to right field, and Brody Schnurpel hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. Sorg led things off on the hill for Wabash Varsity Apaches. The starter surrendered six hits and three runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out five and walking two. Dubois led things off on the bump for Northfield. The starting pitcher allowed seven hits and nine runs (eight earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking two. McWhirt pitched two innings of scoreless ball for Wabash Varsity Apaches in relief. The righty surrendered one hit, striking out four and walking one. Sorg provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Wabash Varsity Apaches with three runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Sam Harris and Reed each collected two hits for Wabash Varsity Apaches. Schultz, Korbin Haupert, and Luke Eviston each collected two hits for Northfield. Schnurpel, Ty Leming, and Schultz each drove in one run for Northfield. Wabash Varsity Apaches will travel to Madison-Grant for their next game on Friday.
