The HS girls running apaches headed to the Marion Invite on Saturday, where the team took on a competitive field and some warm racing conditions. Luckily, the Apaches were scheduled to race in the first race of the day, allowing them to beat the worst of the heat and get their miles in before temperatures really started to climb. The early start didn’t slow the Apaches down. Athletes stepped to the starting line ready to compete, work together, and put their training to the test after a difficult week of practice conditions. The girls set off, racing to the best of their abilities and was able to pull away with a 5th place team finish out of 14 complete teams and 22 schools represented in the race. Freshman Teresina Cordes was first for the Apaches, coming in with a close to PR time of 18:16 and placing 2nd overall. Following in after Cordes, was Sutton Stoffel, another freshman, with a PR time of 20:51 and taking 14th place overall. Next up for the team was Mya Golliher, a sophomore, coming in with a time of 21:56 and taking 29th place. The trio earned medals for placing in the top 30. Coming in for the senior crew was Chloe Cooper, with a time of 24:15 and taking 61st place. Next in the pack was Mallory Tart (senior) with a season PR of 24:43 and taking 64th place overall. Close behind her was another senior, Mia Fairchild, running a time of 25:05 and placing 69th overall. Chasing down another personal best time was Emma Cantrell, another sophomore, with a season PR of 25:53, and placing 85th overall. Cantrell is closing in on her career PR each week! Josie Bailey rounded out the running Apaches with a 27:40 and placing 106th place overall. There were 133 runners total in the Gold Varsity race. The Lady Apaches will return to competition next Saturday at Brown County’s Eagle Classic.
