WHS Tennis Competes in Fremont Invite Wabash Tennis traveled up North to compete in the Fremont Invite on Saturday. Close to the Michigan state line, the temps still played a factor for all teams as the sun was intense and the thermometer was reading 90+. All teams played 3 matches, Wabash finished the day 1-2 garnering a 5-0 win over Lakeland and finishing 3rd in the tournament. Individual Stats: Eli Mattern at 1 singles, went 1-2 on the day. Winning easily over Lakeland in round 1. Round 2 took it's toll in a tight two set match loss to Snyder as the heat of the day rolled over the courts. In a 3rd set match of attrition, Mattern lost to the overall tournament Champion in two physically demanding sets. At 2 singles, Cooper long finished the day 1-2. After a slow start in match one, Long battled in the second set before losing in a slugfest to a solid 2 singles player from Fremont. Long easily took match two on the day winning handily over Lakeland. In match 3, Long played well, but was outlasted by his Snyder opponent. Ashton Coffman playing at 3 singles also went 1-2 on the day. Ashton started well in the cooler temps, but lost his first match to Fremont. Match two, another tough match, Ashton played hard but was unable to complete the win over Snyder. Playing Lakeland in round 3, Ashton pulled out a fairly easy 2 set victory. Clay Shepler and Dillon Pence looked to grow as a 1 doubles team through the three matches this weekend. The duo finished the day 1-2, winning their first career varsity match, by defeating Lakeland after showing improvement in both play and decision making in losses to Snyder and Fremont. The 2 doubles team of Karson McKenzie and TJ Tracy picked up their first varsity win by beating Lakeland 1 dubs in convincing fashion in round 3 of the tournament. The duo played better was unable to prevail in matches with Snyder or Fremont. Wabash is now 1-3 on the season and begins conference play Tuesday at Lewis Cass.
