Highlighted by a new school record in the 4x800 relay the Wabash High School boys track team took the Marion sectional by storm - advancing athletes in 7 events en route to a 5th place team finish. Bluffton won the meet with 94 points, 3 points ahead of Oak Hill (91). Marion came in 3rd with 88, Mississinewa 4th (70), and the Apaches 2 points behind with 68. The top three finishers in all events automatically qualify for next Thursday's regional at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne. The colder than usual temperature was needed to cool off the track after the 4x800 relay which saw the quartet of Jonas Church, Caidan Burchett, Jace Bullins, and Ezra Church finish 2nd setting a new school record clocking a blistering 8:01.88. This broke the previous record of 8:03.85 set in 2019 by Aaron Nickerson, Blakley Cole, Koby Prater, and Zack Reed. Coleson Kugler defended his sectional championship in the 200 running a 22.73. He also returns to the regional in the 100 meter dash by virtue of his runner-up finish. Jonas Church came back in the 1600 to claim a spot in the regional finishing 3rd with a time of 4:31. Caidan Burchett finished 6th in the event. The 800 had 3 individuals run under two minutes all automatically qualifying for the regional. Ezra Church finished 4th, but his finishing time of 2:00.21 will allow him to move on to the regional as well. The 3200 had two Apache regional qualifiers - Isaiah Cordes and Jace Bullins. Isaiah stuck behind the lead Marion runner through 7 laps and made his move on the back stretch of the last lap. In the final stretch however the Marion runner made a final surge to secure 1st place. Jace Bullins fought through back spasms starting on lap 5 to secure the final automatic qualifying spot (3rd). In the final event of the night the Apache 4x400 relay of Jonas Church, Chase Howard, Ezra Church, and Coleson Kugler claimed the sectional championship with a time of 3:28.68 In long jump Preston Cantrell achieved a huge personal record - 18'6" coming in 8th place. The 4x100 relay of Preston Cantrell, Jarrett McWhirt, Colin Patton, and Isaiah Jones finished 6th securing 3 points for the team.
