Apache Tennis Falls to Lewis Cass 2-3 Wabash Tennis took to the courts at Honeywell Park on Tuesday evening, hosting conference foe Lewis Cass in the Apaches’ first conference match of the season. On a beautiful night for tennis, the Apaches battled hard but came up just short, falling to the Kings 3-2. The loss drops Wabash to 0-4 on the season. At No. 2 singles, Cooper Long cruised to victory behind a strong serving performance. Long dominated the first set 6-1 and carried that momentum into the second, controlling points with power and precision to close it out 6-0 and secure the Apaches’ first point. At No. 1 singles, Eli Mattern outlasted Liam Ellington 6-4, 6-3 to give Wabash a 2-0 team lead midway through the match. Mattern’s consistency and ability to move his opponent around the court set up several opportunities to attack short balls, and his aggressive net play sealed the win. In No. 1 doubles, McKenzie and Tracy fell behind early in both sets but fought back each time to put pressure on Lewis Cass freshmen Johnson and Hull. Despite the comeback efforts, the Kings held on for a 6-4, 6-4 victory to cut into Wabash’s lead. The No. 3 singles matchup turned into a test of endurance between Pence (Wabash) and Clark (Lewis Cass). Pence claimed the opening set 6-3, but Clark responded with a 6-1 win in the second. In the deciding set, both players continued to grind through long rallies, but Clark ultimately prevailed to even the team score at 2-2. For the second time this season, the outcome came down to No. 2 doubles. Wiles and Pegg battled back from a 1-4 deficit in the first set to win 7-5, but Lewis Cass’s Figueredo and Pusback regrouped and took control, winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Kings. “This is the third time this year we’ve lost 3-2,” said Wabash coach Mattern. “We can usually count on Eli and Cooper to bring us points—we just need to build the confidence to close out matches at other spots. I’m confident that will come soon.”
