Wabash vs. Eastern Tennis Recap Wabash hosted the Eastern Comets on Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup. In a closely contested battle across positions, the Apaches came up just short, falling 2-3 to the visiting Comets. Wabash continues to find strength in its top two singles spots, while the doubles teams are showing steady improvement as they look for ways to break through. At No. 1 singles, Eli Mattern set the tone for the Apaches with a strong 6-4, 6-3 victory. After falling behind 0-2 early, Mattern quickly turned the match around, taking a 3-2 lead and never looking back. Playing with patience and control, he used precise shot-making to exploit his opponent’s weaknesses and secure the win. At No. 2 singles, Cooper Long added another victory in a hard-fought battle. After dropping the first set 2-6 and trailing 0-2 in the second, Long rallied behind his trademark physical style of play. Mixing in more variety to his shot selection, he battled back to take the second set 6-3 before winning a dramatic third-set tiebreaker 11-9. At No. 3 singles, Dylan Pence ran into a tough opponent. Despite working to vary his shots between slices and topspin, he was unable to find answers and fell 0-6, 0-6. In doubles play, McKenzie and Tracy at No. 1 doubles fought hard but were overpowered by an experienced Comets team, dropping their match 0-6, 0-6. At No. 2 doubles, freshmen Carter Pegg and Noah White (in his first varsity appearance) battled but couldn’t match Eastern’s pace and consistency, also falling 0-6, 0-6. In junior varsity action, Reed Wiles played two singles matches while Eli Dafoe competed in one.
