Wabash Tennis Defeats Blackford 4-1 The Wabash Apaches made the long trip to Blackford High School on Thursday for a non-conference tennis match, returning home with a 4-1 victory over the shorthanded Bruins. With only singles matches contested, Wabash continued to see strong play from its top two positions. Eli Mattern cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Cooper Long controlled play throughout his 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Both veterans dictated the pace of their matches from start to finish, giving the Apaches two quick points. At No. 3 singles, Karson McKenzie made his varsity debut. After dropping the first set 1-6, McKenzie settled in and began to find confidence, holding serve to open the second set and moving ahead 2-1. Blackford’s Huffman, however, used his experience and length at the net to turn the tide, taking the set 6-3 and securing the Bruins’ lone point. Blackford was unable to field varsity doubles, awarding Wabash the remaining two points for the 4-1 team victory. In junior varsity play, Eli Dafoe earned an impressive 8-1 pro-set win for the Apaches.
